Since the Land Registry introduced an ‘open register’ system (where anyone can download a copy of your title), fraudsters have been able to target properties where there is no mortgage or the owner lives elsewhere. In some cases, tenants themselves have stolen the identity of the landlord, sold the property and run off with the proceeds of sale.
